July 13-17, 2008

Many thanks to all who helped with Vacation Bible School held July 13th-17th.  While it was one of the hottest weeks of the summer thus far, our average daily attendance was over 50 children and youth.  Throughout the week the children were guided by memory verses that taught them about the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness.

While the highlights of the week seem almost too numerous to mention, there were some memorable moments that capture the essence of the fun that was had.  From sack races, to the building of barns, the upstairs rooms were bouncing with activity.  Meanwhile in the Blue Ribbon Judging area, everyone seemed to enjoy snacks while voting on their favorite baked goods, flower arrangements, jams and jellies, crafts, or collections.  Downstairs the “Banana Peels” celebrated the fruits of the spirit by singing fun songs and learning the motions.  In the Bible Story Garden, the children intently listened and actively participated in the sharing of the Word.  Even though the wild water games were played outside, water seemed to find its way into all the rooms cooling everyone off.  Last, but not least, we had special visitors on the last evening of VBS; a goat and a young calf were brought in for our very own “petting” area!

In addition to having fun and learning about the fruits of the spirit, the children were very serious in their efforts to contribute to this year’s mission project.  In keeping with the harvest theme, the Fairlawn Community Church Food Bank was chosen as this year’s mission project.  The children and youth brought in over 280 food items for donation to the food bank in addition to 20 Bibles.  The Bibles will be given out upon request to those individuals participating in the food bank program.  Way to go Good Samaritans!

In closing, whether you prayed for us, donated or prepared food, planned a craft, Bible story or game, loaned decoration items or lent a helping hand, everyone’s effort was truly appreciated.  It was a great week!
